Looking for a cage for your ferrets? At one point we all have the Ferret Nation Vs Critter Nation debate. I did too.
I have four ferrets and two chinchillas. My little cuties are escape masters. When I first brought them home, I encountered a zillion escapade episodes. All my efforts of trying to contain them in their cage were mostly futile.
That's when I realized that with these kinds of pets, they are no one size fits all cage! And the search for an appropriate cage began. It was confusing. There was so little information on the internet available on the different types of cages.
Today I'll share with you all the similarities and differences between the Ferret Nation and the Critter Nation cages. I hope it will help to clear the confusion.

Which is the best cage for your ferret? The answer to this question purely depends on your individual needs. However, below is a comprehensive guide on the differences between the Ferret Nation and Critter Nation.
The Manufacturer
Both the Ferret Nation and the Critter Nation are innovative products by Midwest Homes for Pets. Midwest interacted with pet owners, listened to their problems, and came up with a long-lasting pet cage solution.
The Measurements
The Ferret Nation cage measures 36 inches x 25 inches x 62.5 inches. On the other hand, the Critter Nation cage measures 36 inches x 24 inches x 63 inches. As you can see, the Ferret Nation cage is a little bigger though this difference in the size is almost negligible.
Their Designs
Both of them are double shelved cages. They are also very well-made and have a clever design which makes them extremely easy to access.
On top of that, cleaning these cages is seamless. Both have leak-proof pans that act as a play area.
Weight
The Critter Nation cage weighs 109.4 pounds while the Ferret Nation cage weighs roughly 100 pounds. The reason being, since Ferret Nation has a bar spacing of 1 inch, it has fewer bars per square foot. On the other hand, the bar spacing of critter cages is small. Thus, there are more bars per foot making it a little heavier.
Assembly
Assembling both cages is fairly easy as no tools are needed. You'll only need to follow a few easy steps.
Warranty
Both the Critter Nation and the Ferret Nation comes with a 1-year warranty
Bar Spacing
The Ferret Nation cages have a bar spacing of 1 inch while the Critter Nation cages have a bar spacing of ½ inch.
The wire spacing in the Ferret Nation is vertically aligned then that in the Critter Nation which is horizontally aligned.
The gaps in the Ferret Nation cage are small enough such that an averagely sized ferret cannot escape. However, small pets such as rats and chinchillas can easily pass through the 1-inch bar spacing.
Thus, the ½ inch spacing in the Critter Nation is ideal for smaller pets.
The space in the cage is adequate for ferrets to play with their toys. And because most of these pets love to climb, the height is just perfect.
Additionally, all three levels of these cages are adjustable. You can increase or decrease the height of each level as need be.
Strength
Both the Ferret Nation and Critter Nation are made from the square tubing frame. They also have a sturdy and thick wire mesh.
As stated above, the Ferret Nation has a bar spacing of 1 inch while the Critter Nation has a bar spacing of ½ inch. The bars in a Ferret Nation are stronger and are effective in restricting agitated ferrets.
On the other hand, since the bar spacing in the Critter Nation is closer together, they are not as strong. They are best suited for holding small animals.
Accessibility And Ease Of Cleaning
Both of these cages have double doors which are easy to open for easier access and faster cleaning. On top of that, shelves are removable for quicker and more convenient cleaning. Additionally, the removable shelves allow easy feeding.
The Bottom Line
I hope that by now the confusion you early had between the Ferret Nation and Critter Nation is now over.
Both of these cages are well made with adequate playing and climbing space. They are also strong and the bar spaces are fairly small. And because both are very easy to access, the cleaning process is not much of a hassle.
However, it is crystal clear that although these cages have numerous similarities, they are quite different.
The Ferret Nation is designed to accommodate larger sized pets such as ferrets, chinchillas that are 6 months +, etc. It is also stronger than the Critter Nation, and the ferrets cannot escape even if they try.
On the other hand, the Critter Nation is ideal for smaller pets as their bar spacing is just ½ inch. But, I highly recommend against putting ferrets in the Critter nations. Ferrets are a little too heavy. They are also stronger. Thus, they are likely to beak the cage apart.
I hope that this article helps you make an informed decision of the best cage for your little cutie friend!
